Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the need for a radical transformation in Nigeria’s leadership, stating that many of those currently in power should be held accountable for their actions.
He made this assertion while receiving a delegation of six members of the House of Representatives at his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State.
The lawmakers, who are co-sponsoring bills on single six-year terms, rotational presidency, and governorship rotation, were told by Obasanjo that the country’s main problem lies with its leaders.
He stressed that until there is a change in the character and mentality of those in government, no amount of tweaking the system or term limits will bring about meaningful progress.
Obasanjo bluntly stated that many Nigerian leaders should be behind bars, with some even deserving of the death penalty. He emphasized that the quality of leaders is paramount, suggesting that the country needs to rethink its approach to democracy and governance.
He urged the lawmakers to focus on the attributes and track records of potential leaders, seeking role models who can inspire trust and confidence. Obasanjo’s remarks underscore the need for a fundamental shift in Nigeria’s leadership culture to address the country’s deep-seated challenges.
