Pupils and teachers who were abducted by suspected gunmen from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending several weeks in captivity.
The news was disclosed on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his X account.
According to Onanuga, the victims have been released by their abductors.
However, the circumstances surrounding their release were still unclear as of the time of filing this report. It remains uncertain whether they were freed through security efforts, negotiations or the payment of ransom, as no official details have been provided.
The Oyo State Government and security agencies are yet to issue a statement on how the victims regained their freedom.
The victims were abducted on May 15 when heavily armed gunmen attacked three schools in the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area. The affected schools were Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
During the attack, at least two people were killed, including a teacher who was later reported to have been beheaded, while several pupils and some teachers were taken away by the gunmen.
