In an unexpected move, Ahmed Abubakar, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has submitted his resignation, citing personal and family reasons. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted his resignation.
During a media briefing following his meeting with the President, Abubakar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation in a critical role, highlighting the rare privilege of serving under two different administrations.
Abubakar, who has led the NIA since 2018, has been instrumental in overseeing intelligence operations and strategic initiatives crucial to national security. When questioned about his resignation, Abubakar stated, “There are various reasons for such a decision. Some personal and family issues, but nothing serious, and our friendship will continue. Abubakar tendered his resignation after a routine briefing at the Presidential Villa, stating, “This is a regular occurrence, where I brief the President on various issues. Today was no exception. After the briefing, I submitted my resignation, and the President graciously accepted it.”
