Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his commitment to local government development by inaugurating a modern local government house and staff training school at the Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

This marks the first significant infrastructure project for the local government system under his administration, dispelling allegations of undermining the local government structure.

Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Makinde announced the planned conversion of ad-hoc workers across local governments in the state to permanent staff.

He disclosed that he had directed the Commissioner for Local Government to establish guidelines for the conversion process within four weeks. This move aims to bridge the workforce gap and enhance productivity.

The governor emphasized his administration’s ongoing collaboration with local government authorities, assuring that this partnership would continue to bring the benefits of democracy directly to the grassroots.

He noted that when he took office in 2019, the local government system owed salaries, pensions, and gratuities, but his administration has since paid primary school teachers’ leave bonuses for 2017-2023 and cleared backlogs of over N18 billion in pension and N15 billion gratuities to retirees.

Makinde highlighted his administration’s achievements in upgrading 209 Primary Health Care centers, equipping 264 PHCs, and completing 60 model schools in collaboration with local government authorities. He also mentioned the construction and renovation of hundreds of primary school classrooms through the Oyo State SUBEB intervention project.

The governor assured that facilities within the State Secretariat would be renovated and transformed before the expiration of his administration in 2027. The newly-built complex will provide a conducive environment for local government staff and enhance their productivity.

Commissioner for Land, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, described the new complex as a monumental achievement, appreciating Governor Makinde’s insightful leadership. National President of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Ambali Olatunji, and other stakeholders commended the governor for prioritizing local government staff welfare .
