The Federal Government has commenced payment of the new minimum wage to civil servants under its payroll, effective Thursday, September 26, 2024.
This development follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of N70,000 as the new minimum wage on July 18, 2024, and the subsequent passage of the new minimum wage bill into law by the Senate.
According to Bawa Mokwa, Spokesperson of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, federal government civil servants will start receiving alerts for their new minimum wage salary payment starting from Thursday. However, Mokwa did not confirm if the payment will include arrears.
This update comes after Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, confirmed the government’s approval of the upward review of the consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSS) in line with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, 2024.
The payment of the new minimum wage is expected to bring joy and relief to civil servants across the country, following the recent approval and passage into law. The effective date of the payment is Thursday, September 26, 2024, with the new minimum wage set at N70,000. However, the status of arrears payment remains unclear.
