Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, has announced plans to upgrade the Ibadan Airport to international standards within 18 months. The governor made this commitment at the Hijrah 1446 luncheon held at the Presidential Lodge, Secretariat, Ibadan, on Wednesday.
The governor stated that the state government has the necessary resources to drive the project. He also promised that Hajj pilgrims would be airlifted from Ibadan Airport to Saudi Arabia before the end of his tenure.
Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and love among the people of Oyo State, regardless of religious differences. He assured the public that his administration would continue to prioritize the interests and development of the state.
The governor acknowledged the challenges faced by the state and the country but expressed confidence that with the people’s support, these challenges would be overcome. He called for continued support for his administration, highlighting the trust placed in him by the electorate.
A committee will be constituted to oversee the airport upgrade project, with the committee’s formation to be announced by the end of the week. Governor Makinde expressed his commitment to completing the project within 18 months, stating, “I am more than confident now that before my tenure ends, those going for Hajj will take off from Ibadan to Mecca and Medina.”
The governor commended the Chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Sheik Hashim Olamide Ateere, for the smooth execution of the 2024 Hajj operations. He also praised the Muslim community for their support and cooperation.
Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal praised Governor Makinde for his support of the Muslim community. The guest lecturer, Sheik Najimudeen Alkubroh, lauded Governor Makinde’s leadership qualities, describing him as a worthy leader that Nigeria needs.
Other notable attendees included former Deputy Governors Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi and Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi; Chief Mrs. Mutiat Ladoja; Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin; and Chief Judge of Oyo State, Honourable Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Honourable Justice M.A. Adegbola.
In their goodwill messages, Professor Kamil Olosho, Professor Musliudeen Yahya, and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu emphasized the importance of declaring Hijrah a national holiday. Sheikh Atere, Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for his support of the 2024 Hajj exercise.
