The Senate has confirmed the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Lauretta Onochie, as Chairman of the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
The confirmation of Onochie and 12 others as members of the NDDC Board followed the presentation of a report by the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Senator Amos Bulus on Tuesday in plenary.
The Senate however stepped down the nominations of Dr Pius Odubu (Edo State) and Engr Anthony Okanne (Imo State) for not appearing before the Senate Committee on NDDC for screening.
Before their confirmation, some Senators objected to Onochie’s confirmation saying she is not from an oil producing community.
However the Senator representing Rivers East, Senator George Sekibo, kicked against the submission negating her confirmation noting that is not clearly defined in the act establishing the NDDC.
In the meantime, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan charged the newly confirmed board to hit the ground running by embarking on projects that will ensure peace and stability in the Niger Delta region.
Sen. Lawan also requested that copies of the audit reports be made available to the National Assembly
